In the weeks since I reopend checkout on our website I have seen several very clear attempts at screening stolen credit cards using checkout on our website.

The first occurred on 4/06/2018 with about 8,600 attempts to charge different credit cards. All the attempts were generated from 3 orders with similar fake email addresses and incomplete shipping addresses. One credit card charge actually went through and I canceled the order before it was shipped.

The next night on 4/07/2018 there were about 3,5000 attempts to charge different cards. All generated from 2 attempted orders and this time all the transactions were denied.

There continued to be more attempts, but a order processing rule I setup through an addon our shopping cart provider (3dcart) offers called FraudWatch was able to reject these attempts before credit card processing. However there were still thousands of attempts, all from one or two orders coming from the same IP address and fake email addresses.

Last night there was another group (screen shot below) of 3,584 attempts that made it through the FraudWatch rule, but were all declined by the payment gateway (Chase Paymentech).

Declined credit card transactions screen shotThe reason I am writing this post is that I find it surprising the shopping cart, 3dcart, does not seem to have anything built in to prevent this type of blatant credit card screening or to at least minimize it. 3dcart is literally allowing several thousand credit card attempts, one after the other, typically 2-3 seconds apart from the same IP address and for the exact same order.

The credit card gateway, Chase Paymentech, does not seem to do much better either, allowing the same website to make thousands upon thousands declined credit card attempts one after another only seconds apart.

I am thankful most of the orders are being declined. Around 5 years ago we had a similar situation that resulted in hundreds of approved orders that had to be manually canceled and voided.

The doodle of Petey The USB plug isn’t the only fun thing a found sorting through old papers, I also came across YCS Employee Web Meet and Greet sheets we filled out. Although they are a bit dated (I think they are from 2014 or 2015) they are great for filler content here on the blog (they were originally meant for our website’s about us page but that project got lost in the hustle and bustle of daily business and was never completed).

This post is the second of six and up this time is Jeff. Jeff has been with us since November 2012 and is the backbone of our warehouse keeping the day to day packaging and labeling moving smoothly. I have included a scan of the original at the end of this post.

The Power of Adapters

I remember, as a kid, one time when I wanted to listen to a phonograph (probably Frampton Comes Alive) on my record player and I discovered my mondo-huge earphones were not functioning on the right side anymore. I looked to my Walkman (cassette format in those days folks) headphones and knew I was stuck; big headphones = 1/4” plug and Walkman phones = 1/8” plug. I had 90% of the technology but in the end I had to listen to “Do you feel like we do” at about 25% of the volume I had desired to because mom was watching 60 minutes and preparing Sunday dinner. Little did I know then the power of adapters.

Many times we buy a cable for an application and then somewhere down the road we need another one that is almost identical but not quite. Cables can be messy and carrying an abundance of different types can lead to tangled messes in your suitcase, gig bag, briefcase, or purse. This is where an adapter can be your friend. Here is some simple advice that is especially helpful to travelers with mobile electronic devices, but pretty useful at home as well.

  • Purchase the CABLE that suits the use most important to you.
  • Buy adapters that can piggy-back on that cable for applications less frequently visited.Purchase a small organizer that you can organize the adapters
  • in and then label the adapter or case-slot with the name or application of the adapter.
  • With some adapters you can lose function, so choose wisely and do not be afraid to ask customer service for input as to which adapter will best suit your purposes.
  • Most adapters will add what I call “rigid mass” to your cable in/output. Make sure they are out of the way of foot/hand traffic, bumping them can damage your input and output jacks as well as the adapter itself.
  • If a right angle fits into the equation, remember you can make a straight connector into a right angle with an adapter, but they do not make a right angle to straight adapter! (think about it)

Pretty basic stuff, but it’s not always common knowledge that the right adapters can save you time, space, and a host of headaches if you put a little thought into your adapter arsenal.

Just Last week I used a ¼ female to ⅛ male adapter to plug my “good” headphones into my pc and listen to AND watch “FCA 35”, a concert in which Peter Frampton plays all of Frampton Comes Alive in the same song order as the album, it’s nice to hear he still has verve and intensity. ..and it’s certainly nice to have the right adapter to listen to it in it’s full sonic glory… bloody good, bloody great!
